Historical Notes On September 11, 2001, U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Philip J. Smith served as a Branch Chief at the Pentagon, with responsibility for supervising multiple staff members and managing core personnel functions. His workspace was a compartmentalized office area, 2D-450, which sat directly in the path of Flight 77. At the time of the attack, Smith was standing in front of a copy machine making photocopies for a meeting when the plane struck the building. Smith was hit by a fireball and sustained burns to his face and other exposed skin. Despite his injuries, Smith administered first aid to other Pentagon employees and searched for additional survivors.
