Historical Notes
At 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2001, atop 1 Times Square, outgoing New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ushered in the New Year by pressing a button that released an illuminated crystal ball memorializing the victims of 9/11 and honoring first responders. Six feet in diameter and weighing 1,070 pounds, the Times Square Ball was composed of 504 Waterford crystal triangles. Inscriptions on the crystals acknowledged losses from the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard all four hijacked flights, as well as from the first responder agencies. The home countries of the victims were also included. The engraved tallies of those presumed dead were estimates, reflecting incomplete knowledge at that moment in time.
Twenty Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries are represented among the engraved crystals memorializing those killed on 9/11.
