Historical Notes
Waleska Martinez was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. After earning her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1986, she moved to New York for an intensive English course, later settling in New Jersey. She joined the U.S. Census Bureau and rose to become a supervisor. On September 11, she and a coworker, Marion Britton, boarded Flight 93 for a seminar in San Francisco. Waleska was 37 years old.

The language-intensive program offered by SUNY Oswego was designed to help international students make the transition to American academic life through full-time instruction in English as a second language. Waleska Martinez’s certificate marking her proficiency in English as a second language reflects the hard work and dedication demonstrated by many people who aspired to live and work in the United States. As proven by various other artifacts donated in her memory, Martinez was simultaneously very proud of her Puerto Rican upbringing and culture while also embracing the promises and opportunity of a life in America.
