Historical Notes
A direct outgrowth of national security failings demonstrated on September 11, 2001, the Aviation and Transportation Security Act was created, passed, and signed by Congress. From this legislation was born the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security granted authority over the security of transportation systems within and connecting to the United States, particularly airports.
The TSA regularly tests the vigilance of the country’s airports by deploying a team of agents to visit and inspect their security vulnerabilities. Potential security weaknesses are usually determined by focusing on the performance of the facility’s employees, who are unaware of the test dates and identities of the TSA’s Red Team evaluators. Facilities that pass the tests are awarded this crest pin.
