Landing Gear
Description
Acrylic on canvas painting titled Landing Gear (2001-2002) by Anthony Graviano (b. 1968). The painting depicts a piece of landing gear from one of the hijacked airplanes found on the street near the World Trade Center. The wheel fragment in the painting resembles the one captured by several photographers recovered near Rector and West Streets on 9/11.
Historical Notes
On September 11, 2001, and for months thereafter, New York based artist Anthony Graviano made regular visits to Ground Zero. Back in his studio, he would translate those scenes of devastation into paintings. Using bold, gestural strokes and vivid colors, he attempted to process the site’s unreality by focusing on a few distinctive forms deciphered amidst the ruins.
