Description
Located at bedrock level in the 9/11 Museum is a preserved and exposed steel support grid used to secure heavy columns.
Historical Notes
A grillage is a steel support grid used to secure heavy columns. It distributes column weight over a wide surface area, reducing the stress on bedrock. Each of the Twin Towers had 47 interior core columns, some of which were anchored to grillage bases. Collectively, the columns and grillage supported the towers’ core and elevator system, a load of one million tons.
