Description
Oil painting on paper, Untitled, (ca. 1969) by William Nelson (d. 1997). The painting depicts the construction of the World Trade Center as seen from the docks in New Jersey across the Hudson River. The North Tower, on the left, rises higher than the South Tower on the right.
Historical Notes
Amateur oil painter William Everett Nelson painted this landscape en plein air around the time the World Trade Center Twin Towers were raising the skyline of lower Manhattan in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As viewed from the New Jersey shore while looking east across the lower Hudson River, the two rising skyscrapers are at the composition’s center, conspicuously different in height, with kangaroo cranes positioned at the top.
