Red, White, and Blue
Description
Acrylic on canvas painting titled Red, White, and Blue (2001-2002) by Anthony Graviano (b. 1968). The painting depicts a portion of the steel facade at Ground Zero rendered in white and red, set against a blue background. The coloring of the piece parallels the colors of the American flag.
Historical Notes
On September 11, 2001, and for months thereafter, New York–based artist Anthony Graviano made regular visits to Ground Zero. He was awed by the sight of the colossal remnants of the steel structures.
The painting's title, Red, White, and Blue, conveys the artist’s recognition of the unusual unity of spirit generated by the events of 9/11, “where no one thing mattered, politically, religiously, or anything else; all citizens of this mixed pot came together.”
