Historical Notes
To capture the grandeur of the World Trade Center’s construction, architectural artists Lili Réthi and Nicholas Solovioff made sketches for the Port Authority beginning in 1967. These prints chronicle the rise of the Twin Towers through 1973. Books of these illustrations went to World Trade Center consultants, collaborators, and prospective tenants as gifts.

Curator's Comment
American artist Nicholas Solovioff (1927-1994) earned his BA, MFA, and PhD at Harvard. As a doctoral student, he taught at the Fogg Museum of Art and at Parsons School of Design. He specialized in architecture, science, and technology as well as the natural world and created illustrations for various magazines, government manuals, and architectural proposals. For a time, Solovioff served as artist-in-residence for the Port of New York Authority, as the PANYNJ was known until 1972, where his work included illustrations compiled in the portfolio offered to the Museum.
