Description
Print by Nicholas Solovioff (1927-1994), dated 1970, depicting the North Tower mid-construction with part of the exterior cladding installed and some interior lights aglow. The South Tower is visible in the background. In the foreground are lower tenement buildings located some distance away from the World Trade Center site. A Christmas tree is lit up in the center window of one of those tenements. The artist's signature appears in the lower left corner.
Historical Notes
To capture the grandeur of the World Trade Center’s construction, architectural artists Lili Réthi and Nicholas Solovioff made sketches for the Port Authority beginning in 1967. These prints chronicle the rise of the Twin Towers through 1973. Books of these illustrations went to World Trade Center consultants, collaborators, and prospective tenants as gifts.
