Historical Notes
FDNY Ladder Company 7 firefighter, Thomas Byrne, was off-duty on September 11, 2001. Nevertheless, when news broke about the unfolding terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Byrne immediately headed to lower Manhattan from his Montauk, NY home.
Byrne served in many capacities at Ground Zero in the weeks and months that followed 9/11. Like many other recovery workers who participated in the clean-up operation, Byrne retained mementos from his tours of duty on the site. In March 2002, on two discrete occasions, he recalled digging up and preserving an angel ornament and an April 1997 Port Authority-issued World Trade Center Fire Safety Guide.
