Historical Notes
Born in the Bronx, Melissa Doi lived with her mother in the borough’s Throngs Neck section. Melissa had studied ballet and had considered careers in dance and art before joining IQ Financial Systems and becoming a senior manager. On September 11, Melissa spoke at length with a 9-1-1 operator, describing conditions on the South Tower’s 83rd floor, where she was trapped. She was 32 years old.
Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Courtney Walcott lived in Hackensack, New Jersey. Two evenings a week, he mentored teenage boys at his church in Jamaica, Queens. He also coached peewee football camp during the summer months. Courtney was employed as a manager at IQ Financial Systems. On September 11, he was at work on the 83rd floor of the South Tower. Courtney was 37 years old.
A native of Oceanside, Long Island, Karen Schmidt lived in nearby Bellmore. She was a tennis enthusiast who often played the game with friends and enjoyed the annual US Open tennis tournament. Karen was employed as a software engineer at IQ Financial Systems. On September 11, she was at work on the 83rd floor of the South Tower. Karen was 42 years old.
Eton, England native David Rathkey came to the United States for work in 1981. He lived in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, with his wife, Julia, and their three children. A soccer enthusiast, David played for a local men’s team and coached his children’s teams. On September 11, he was on the South Tower’s 83rd floor at IQ Financial Systems, where he worked as a sales executive. David was 47 years old.
