Movie poster for the film Superman II, 1980. The poster is an illustration of the actor Christopher Reeve as Superman, flying over the New York Harbor, he is headed towards the three antagonists of the film in the foreground. In the background is the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline with the Twin Towers in the center. At the bottom, the film's synopsis is printed: "The adventure continues | The three outlaws from Krypton descend to Earth to confront the Man of Steel, in a cosmic battle for world supremacy." The film title, "Superman II" is printed at the top.
Until their destruction on 9/11, the Twin Towers dominated the Manhattan skyline. Symbols of American ingenuity and audacity, they provided an immediate visual association with the irrepressible vitality of New York City. Appearing again and again in the movies, the towers became permanently etched into the public imagination.
