Historical Notes
Joyce Ng was in her room on the 13th floor of the New York Marriott World Trade Center hotel when she felt what seemed like an explosion. Looking out her window, she saw people shielding their heads from falling pieces of metal, glass, and burning paper. Ng grabbed her room key and the wallet containing her luggage claim ticket and left the building. Outside, she saw the North Tower in flames and a low-flying airplane overhead. Thinking a military plane was on a rescue mission, Ng was shocked to see a commercial jetliner strike the South Tower.
Ng found shelter at another Marriott hotel near Times Square, which provided roll-away cots to thw many who were stranded. Back at home in Massachusetts, Ng wondered whether all the guests and staff from the World Trade Center Marriott had made it to safety. She posted her 9/11 story on the internet and invited other hotel guests to contact her. The network Ng founded serves as a forum for Marriott survivors to exchange information about their experiences on 9/11.
