Historical Notes
In addition to searching for survivors, finding the bodies of victims buried in the ruins of the World Trade Center was a primary goal for those who worked at the site. Using their hands and small tools, rescue and recovery workers dug through debris piled 70 feet high and extending equally far belowground. Spotters scrutinized debris as operating engineers controlling grappler claws lifted loads of steel and all that was entangled in it. Hand signals and reflective apparel made searchers visible to grappler operators, minimizing the ever-present dangers to safety.
