Wooden-handled folding shovel with a pointed steel blade. The handle is worn with remnants of faded green paint and a piece of blue tape wrapped around the end of the handle. The exposed wood is scratched and splintering, and the steel blade is rough and rusted.

Historical Notes
NYPD officer Kenneth Winkler of Emergency Service Unit 1 responded with his unit on 9/11 and operated the command post from the ESU vehicle, coordinating communications with responders inside the Towers. After the collapse, he continued to direct response efforts away from the site. Winkler used this shovel during the recovery period at Ground Zero.
