Description
Black ink "study" drawing for Rising Sun, created in 1976 by Richard Sloat. The drawing utilizes heavy lines and depicts a southern view of lower Manhattan with the Twin Towers in the center and birds in the sky.
Historical Notes
Artist Richard Sloat lived in a loft apartment in the Lower East Side with his partner, Su-Li Hung. The two had met in the early 1970s at the Art Students League of New York. Often using the Twin Towers in their work, the couple initially earned a livable income by selling prints of their art on the streets of New York. Versions of Rising Sun are in the collections of the New-York Historical Society, the Library of Congress, and the National Academy of Design. It is also reproduced as an illustration in two books: Impressions of New York by Marilyn Symmes and A Short History of New York (3rd edition) by Joanne Reitano.
