Historical Notes Queens native Raymond Downey lived in Deer Park, Long Island, with his wife, Rosalie. They had raised five children. A former U.S. Marine and 39-year FDNY veteran, Raymond was an expert on building collapses and had responded to the bombing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1995. He led the FDNY’s Special Operations Command. On September 11, Battalion Chief Downey responded to the towers. He was 63 years old.
