View from the Q Train
Description
Lithograph print titled View from the Q Train, created by Brenda Berkman (b. 1951). The print depicts a view of the lower Manhattan skyline as seen from inside a Q train crossing over the Manhattan Bridge. The One World Trade Center building is framed by the window of the subway door. Graffiti on two bridge beams references two Japanese artists famous for their Views series, who influenced the artist. The left-positioned graffiti reads "Hiroshige" and the right reads "Hokusai," both inscribed in Kanji. The print is signed.
Historical Notes
This print is part of a series titled 36 Views of One World Trade Center, created by 9/11 first responder and FDNY member Brenda Berkman as she documented the construction of the new One World Trade Center building from 36 vantage points around the city. For Berkman, printmaking became a path through the trauma she had experienced on 9/11 and in the subsequent months that she spent at Ground Zero.
