Historical Notes
9/11 Part I (2002) and 9/11 Part II (2003) are drawn from the artist's visit to Ground Zero a month after the September 11th attacks. When viewed together, the works depict the events of 9/11 as abrupt, drastic alterations to the lower Manhattan landscape.
Both works are set on Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF board) and comprised of encaustic wax created from beeswax and damar varnish. This mixture is heated until malleable and applied to the MDF board with a small palette knife. Oil pastels, other waxes, powder pigments, and ash are mixed into the encaustic wax and applied in layers, offering each piece a distinct texture and physicality. Both pieces also include layers of paper collage.
