Historical Notes
Born in Sheffield, England, Suria Clarke—whose first name means “shining one” in Sanskrit—was known for her sunny smile and outlook. Suria had lived and worked in Brussels, Belgium, before moving to New York City in 1998. She settled in Brooklyn and became a vice president at eSpeed, a Cantor Fitzgerald subsidiary. On September 11, Suria was at work on the North Tower’s 105th floor. She was 30 years old.

Curator's Comment
During Christmas 2000, Suria’s mother asked her children to give her a tape with the music they would take with them to a desert island. Following Suria's death, a two-disk CD album containing some of Suria’s selections and her comments on the songs was created as a tribute to her.
