Historical Notes Queens native Yamel Merino lived in Yonkers, New York, with her eight-year-old son. At the ambulance company MetroCare, she rose from the transport division to be an emergency medical technician. She hoped to continue her education to become a nurse. On September 11, Yamel was providing medical assistance outside the South Tower when it collapsed. She was 24 years old.
Curator's Comment Yamel Merino was born in Queens, New York, to parents who had immigrated from the Dominican Republic. She worked hard to earn a GED and returned to school for further training as an EMT. She quickly became a standout and was honored as MetroCare’s EMT of the Year just two years prior to 9/11. HIDE
