Historical Notes Brooklyn native Maria Ramirez lived in Canarsie. While they were vacationing in the Dominican Republic in August 2001, Maria’s boyfriend, David, proposed to her. Maria worked as an office manager at Langan Engineering and Environmental Sciences at 90 West Street, across from the Twin Towers. On September 11, she was trapped in an elevator in her building when the South Tower collapsed. Maria was 25 years old.
