Rising Sun
Description
Aquatint etching by Richard Sloat titled Rising Sun, 1977. The print depicts the Lower East Side looking down Henry Street towards lower Manhattan with the Twin Towers in the background. The street is lined with tenement buildings and parked cars. A flock of birds is in the foreground.
Historical Notes
Artist Richard Sloat lived in a loft apartment in the Lower East Side with his partner, Su-Li Hung. The two had met in the early 1970s at the Art Students League of New York. Often using the Twin Towers in their work, the couple initially earned a livable income by selling prints of their art on the streets of New York. Versions of Rising Sun are in the collections of the New-York Historical Society, Library of Congress, and the National Academy of Design. It is also reproduced as an illustration in two books: Impressions of New York by Marilyn Symmes, and A Short History of New York (3rd edition), by Joanne Reitano.
