Movie poster for the film King Kong, 1976. The poster features an illustration of the giant gorilla, King Kong, straddling the Twin Towers with the Manhattan skyline in the background. King Kong is holding his female hostage in one hand and grasping a flaming aircraft in the other. Helicopters and another plane circle around Kong's head. "KING KONG" is printed in bold red text towards the bottom of the poster.
Until their destruction on 9/11, the Twin Towers dominated the Manhattan skyline. Symbols of American ingenuity and audacity, they provided an immediate visual association with the irrepressible vitality of New York City. Appearing again and again in the movies, the towers became permanently etched into the public imagination.
