Born in Sydney, Australia, Stephen Tompsett came to New York in the 1980s on business and fell in love—with both the city and his future wife, Dorry. The two were raising their school-age daughter in Garden City, Long Island, where Stephen was a lector at their church. On September 11, Stephen, a senior vice president at Instinet, was at a conference on the North Tower’s 106th floor. He was 39 years old.
