Historical Notes
By late afternoon on September 11, 2001, the urge to mourn alongside others brought people together throughout New York City and across the country. In the days that followed, people gathered to hold vigils on college campuses, in parks and town halls, in places of worship, and elsewhere. For weeks after, events were organized to bring people together in a spirit of community support and healing.
Spontaneous memorials appeared in town squares, on roadside billboards, in murals painted on the sides of buildings, and outside firehouses and police stations.
