Historical Notes
The events of 9/11 had a dramatic impact on the mental health of millions of Americans, particularly New Yorkers and the communities surrounding the city. With support from the federal government, state and local mental health authorities organized an intervention program aimed at addressing the mental trauma experienced by residents of the disaster area. The program, named Project Liberty, provided free educational and crisis counseling services to tens of thousands of New Yorkers in its initial months of operation.
Other community-based efforts offered group counseling initiatives and a variety of other support services.
