Historical Notes
Less than a month after 9/11, the United States initiated a military campaign in Afghanistan. Called Operation Enduring Freedom, this action was waged against al-Qaeda and the Taliban, the Islamist group that ruled Afghanistan and provided safe haven to terrorists. Many young Americans were inspired to enlist in this “War on Terror” in response to the 9/11 attacks while others were strongly opposed and protested against it.
