Historical Notes
9/11 was the deadliest foreign attack on American soil and the first major attack by a foreign entity since the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. It awakened both a new sense of vulnerability and resurgent patriotism. Many feared additional attacks, including the use of chemical and biological weapons. Anxiety about terrorism characterized the “new normal.”
The legacy of the 9/11 attacks continues to shape lives and influence public safety. One immediate and enduring consequence of the attacks is the increased security protocols at airports and entrances to public venues. Another is the public’s heightened awareness of suspicious activity, unattended packages, and unusual mail.
