Historical Notes Bronx-born James Romito lived in Washington Township, New Jersey. He had two grown children. A PAPD chief, James oversaw PAPD emergency operations and had created a housing and medical program for the homeless at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. On September 11, Chief Romito reported to the North Tower’s 27th floor to lead rescue operations. He was 51 years old.
