Historical Notes Leon Smith lived in Brooklyn, where he was born. He was the father of three grown daughters. Leon worked as a chauffeur for FDNY Ladder Company 118. After ensuring that the company’s truck was in pristine condition at the end of his shift, he often worked on the cars of his firehouse colleagues. On September 11, Firefighter Smith responded to the World Trade Center with his unit. He was 48 years old.
