Historical Notes
Lifelong Staten Island resident Gary Geidel lived in Tottenville with his wife, Mathilda, and their young daughter. He played softball and football on a local team, the Tottenville Lizards. Gary was a shipyard welder before joining the FDNY, where he served at Rescue Company 1. On September 11—two weeks from retiring with 20 years on the job—Firefighter Geidel responded to the towers. He was 44 years old.
