Mineola, Long Island, native William McGovern lived in Smithtown with his wife, Mary. They had two children—a grown son and a school-age daughter. William used his flexible hours as a firefighter to spend time with his children, serving as a class parent and coaching their sports teams. On September 11, Battalion Chief McGovern responded to the towers with FDNY’s Battalion 2. He was 49 years old.
