Historical Notes
The Port Authority Police World Trade Center Traveling Memorial was created in 2002 by two retired Port Authority Police Department lieutenants, Chester Weekes and Gene Smith, who participated in the recovery operations at Ground Zero. With the approval of their immediate supervisors, they set aside certain objects found in the rubble that they saw as compelling and worthy of preservation.
When the recovery work was completed in late May, 2002, Weekes and Smith transformed a motor home into a traveling memorial exhibition and began a journey around the country. The exhibit contained an extensive pictorial display, a video documentary, and numerous genuine artifacts recovered from Ground Zero. The tour officially concluded several months after the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
