Historical Notes Growing up in Saitama, Japan, Katsuyuki Hirai practiced kendo, a martial art based on samurai swordsmanship. As a vice president for Chuo Mitsui Trust and Banking, he traveled often. On assignment in the United States, Katsuyuki lived in Hartsdale, New York, with his wife, Ayako, and became a fan of American baseball. On September 11, he was at work on the South Tower’s 83rd floor. He was 32 years old.
