Description
Veterinary Medical Assistance Team silver-toned lapel pin with “VMAT” in blue letters. Images integrated into the letters represent elements of natural disasters. The “V” suggests a tornado, “M” a fire, “A” lightning, and “T” a bending palm tree for hurricane. A small white medallion with the number “2” in blue hangs from the pin and represents the team number.
Historical Notes
The Veterinary Medical Assistance Team (VMAT) program was established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in 1993. It is a private-public partnership with the federal government funded by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). In the event of a disaster, federal and state governments ask VMATs to provide veterinary medical treatment to animals. VMAT, part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), is coordinated by the Department of Health and Human Services.
