Historical Notes
The New York City Department of Correction is responsible for New York City’s inmates. As its own entity, the DOC employs thousands of uniformed officers and civilian staff. Much like the NYPD, the agency is comprised of a Special Operations Division, K-9 Unit, Emergency Service Unit, and Harbor Unit. All parts of the agency played a role in the initial response effort on September 11 and remained at Ground Zero throughout the recovery period. Correction personnel provided coverage on-site, at the morgue, and at the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island while simultaneously maintaining the security of inmates across New York City.
