Historical Notes
Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting the rescue and recovery. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently. Access credentials were issued by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC), and service organizations issued identification cards so that authorized individuals could move freely within their assigned areas. These cards, along with pins and patches, became badges of honor and, eventually, cherished keepsakes.
