Historical Notes
On September 18, 2001, the New York Post’s front cover blazed with the headline “WANTED | DEAD or ALIVE | Osama bin Laden | For mass murder in New York City.” The cover was printed to resemble an Old American West “Wanted” poster, with bin Laden’s effigy at its center. The newspaper’s cover design was inspired by President George W. Bush’s remarks delivered from the Pentagon on September 17.
The newspaper’s front page ignited an overwhelming response from the public, and was seen displayed in storefront windows proximate to Ground Zero and throughout the city. The Post immediately recognized that they had tapped into mounting patriotic fervor and decided to reproduce the cover on T-shirts sold for profit.
