Historical Notes
On September 16, 2007, former Giants football star George Martin embarked on a charitable cross-country walking tour, “Journey for 9/11.” Martin walked more than 3,000 miles to call attention to the plight of ailing first responders and Ground Zero recovery workers so as to raise money for their medical care. When he arrived at his destination 10 months later, on June 21, 2008, he had raised more than $2 million for the cause, promoted media and public awareness about the plight of those responders, and worn through over 20 pairs of sneakers.
