The first print in the series includes a ghost image of the artist's 9/11 lithograph self-portrait titled 2001 with hands held over the figure's head as if protecting from falling debris, superimposed over the WTC building site with cranes, trucks, construction equipment, and a few small worker figures. The print is signed.
Historical Notes
This print is part of a series titled 36 Views of One World Trade Center, created by 9/11 first responder and FDNY member Brenda Berkman as she documented the construction of the new One World Trade Center building from 36 vantage points around the city. In some of her prints, Berkman has inserted herself as a 9/11 survivor and witness to the revitalization and rebuilding of the World Trade Center site. For Berkman, printmaking became a path through the trauma she had experienced on 9/11 and in the subsequent months that she spent at Ground Zero.
