Historical Notes
James Kazalis was engrossed in paperwork at his desk on the 67th floor of the South Tower when he heard an explosion. Seeing swirling paper outside the window, he shut down his computer, grabbed his jacket and briefcase, and entered the nearest stairwell.
When he reached the 44th floor, Kazalis exited the stairwell and joined others watching a news report of a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. He also heard a public address announcement that the disaster was confined to the North Tower. Kazalis was considering whether to return upstairs when he was knocked to the floor by the force of hijacked Flight 175's crash into the South Tower.
Kazalis successfully evacuated the building and began walking north. While waiting for a ferry to New Jersey, Kazalis stayed informed about the developing crisis by listening to the news on the transistor radio he had been carrying in his briefcase.
