Historical Notes
About a week after the May 1, 2011, raid in which Osama bin Laden and his associates were killed, President Barack Obama and Leon Panetta, the Director of Central Intelligence, held a ceremony honoring individuals who were directly involved in the raid’s planning and execution. At the event, President Obama and DCI Panetta handed out challenge coins commemorating the success of Operation Neptune Spear.
