Historical Notes
Chris Galluzzo, a soccer coach in Commack, Long Island and a Manhattan real estate developer, spearheaded the formation of the 9/11 New York Soccer Foundation shortly after the attacks. The group’s charitable efforts grabbed the attention of amateur and professional players and coaches, game officials, and the media with the Family Soccer Festival at Farmingdale State College on November 23, 2001. More than $70,000 was raised for the families of 9/11 victims at the event through raffles, concessions, and an auction of soccer jerseys autographed by well-known footballers. This jersey was retained by Peter Holland, founder of One United USA (formerly the Manchester United Supporters Club USA), the official membership and supporters club for Manchester United in the United States.
