Historical Notes
West Virginia Firefighter Thomas Bowen served as a rescue and recovery worker at Ground Zero with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) arm and the New York City Office of Emergency Management (NYC OEM) for the entire nine-month recovery period. In the years following his service, Bowen struggled with lung disease and respiratory complications linked to his time at Ground Zero. He used this incentive spirometer to aid his recovery after lung resection surgery.
