Historical Notes
Born in Oakdale, Long Island, James Amato lived in Ronkonkoma with his wife, Deborah, and their four children. A wrestler in college and a skier, he was a captain in FDNY Squad 1. Once ordering firefighters out of a building that exploded seconds later, he said, “Timing is everything.” On September 11, Captain Amato and his squad responded to the World Trade Center. He was 43 years old.
