Historical Notes
Assigned to the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force in Washington, D.C., Richard Stallings was wrapping up an arrest on September 11, 2001, when he heard that a plane had struck the World Trade Center. Soon after, he received a transmission over his FBI radio that directed all FBI personnel on the streets to deploy to the Pentagon in response to reports of a plane crash and smoke. Upon arriving, Stallings put on his FBI raid jacket and work gloves and joined in the search for survivors. Entering the building near the aircraft’s point of entry, Stallings made his way through dark, smoky corridors, calling out to let anyone injured or trapped know that help was nearby.
Stallings assisted with rescue efforts throughout the day and continued to work at the Pentagon until late October. He was issued this FBI hard hat and an identification card, giving him clearance to search all areas of the Pentagon.
