Description
Plastic hard hat with cap-style brim and interior ratchet suspension. The hard hat is blue with the NYPD Emergency Squad logo on the front featuring an emergency vehicle and printed text: "POLICE | EMERGENCY | SQUAD." There are a few commemorative stickers on the hat, including one of the Twin Towers with an American flag. The back has a small, sticker with an image of the city skyline with "NYPD | 1 | ESU" overlaid on the skyline. Around the border of the sticker is text: "Truck One | Manhattan." "E" and "1" stickers on the back of the hat are almost completely faded or have fallen off. The hat is dirty and scratched.

Historical Notes
NYPD officer Kenneth Winkler of Emergency Service Unit 1 responded with his unit on 9/11 and operated the command post from the ESU vehicle, coordinating communications with responders inside the Towers. After the collapse he continued to direct response efforts away from the site. Winkler wore this hard hat during the recovery period at Ground Zero.
