Printed text on the card reads: "State of New York | Division of Criminal Justice Services | Municipal Police Training Council | Hereby Acknowledges and Declares that | John W. Perry | Has successfully completed the | Basic Training for Peace Officers | Without Firearms Training." Awarded May 21, 1999. The card is laminated and slightly discolored.

John also held a law degree and served on the New York Civil Liberties Union board. John was planning to retire from the NYPD to work full time as a lawyer. Off duty on September 11, Officer Perry responded to the towers. He was 38 years old.
